Security for school students and children

The Act Prohibiting Discriminatory and Other Degrading Treatment of Children and Pupils (2006:67, "BeL") ceased to apply as of 1 January 2009. A new chapter in the Education Act (1985:1100) replaces the section of the BeL concerning degrading treatment, and the provisions on discrimination are written into the new anti-discrimination legislation.

The provisions of the Education Act are designed to hinder and prevent degrading treatment, such as bullying, that is not directly attributable to any particular grounds of discrimination. The new Discrimination Act (2008:567) is intended to combat discrimination on grounds of sex, ethnic origin, religion or other belief, sexual orientation and disability in activities regulated by the Education Act.
