Forensic medicine

Within the justice system, the National Board of Forensic Medicine is the central government agency responsible for examinations conducted by a forensic psychiatrist, medico-legal examinations, and forensic chemical and genetic examinations. The police and the prosecution service, for example, sometimes need to request medico-legal examinations in connection with criminal investigations. The Ministry of Justice is responsible for the laws and ordinances applicable to the National Board of Forensic Medicine and governs its operations.

Issues relating to the National Board of Forensic Medicine and forensic medicine in general within the areas of responsibility of the Ministry of Justice include

  • rules for the issue of legal certificates, and
  • procedures in connection with investigations into deaths and serious injuries in connection with police action.
