Government newsletter - Violence against women - the most urgent gender equality issue

The Government is deepening and intensifying the major drive to prevent and combat men's violence against women that was launched during the last electoral period. Women and men, girls and boys, must be able to live free of the fear of being subjected to violence and other abuse. Today, on International Women's Day, the Government would like to turn the spotlight on this issue.

Ewa Björling: We want to host the European culinary championships in Sweden in 2014

On Monday 5 March, Minister for Trade Ewa Björling will present the Government's initiative for the Bocuse d'Or Europe, which is taking place in Brussels this year. Dr Björling wants the competition to be held in Sweden in 2014.
"Food is an important part of the creative industries and a good way to broaden our exports and strengthen the image of Sweden and Sweden's appeal as a tourist destination," says Dr Björling.

Continued focus on the economy in the EU

The economic crisis has tightened its grip on Europe. Several European countries have huge national debts and need to implement major reforms. And so the economic crisis is once again the weighty topic on the agenda when EU heads of state and government gather for a new summit in Brussels on 1-2 March. The Prime Minister congratulates the Crown Princess Couple on the birth of the newborn princess

The foreign policy debate is held in the Riksdag today and traditionally begins with the Minister for Foreign Affairs presenting the Statement of Government Policy on Foreign Affairs - a programmatic declaration setting out visions for Sweden's work in the world.

Women managers make proposals for greater gender equality

On Wednesday, 150 women managers participated in a workshop to discuss what should be done to get more women into leading positions. The workshop was the kick-off to the Northern Future Forum summit. At the summit, nine heads of government from the Nordic and Baltic countries and the United Kingdom will discuss women's entrepreneurship and leadership, and older people in the labour market from a growth perspective.

Summit on growth issues in Stockholm

Nine northern European prime ministers will meet in Stockholm this week. They will exchange experiences and discuss how to achieve long-term sustainable growth alongside the urgent economic crisis management that has dominated European affairs in recent years.

Focus on health and social care for elderly people

2012 has been designated the European Year of Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations. In Sweden, the Government is continuing to support efforts by municipalities to introduce local dignity guarantees in elderly care services. The Government nominates Mona Sahlin to the post of ILO Director-General in Geneva

Sweden has nominated Ms Mona Sahlin as candidate for the post of Director-General of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) in Geneva. Ms Mona Sahlin has been Deputy Prime Minister, leader of the Social Democratic Party and minister in various periods with responsibility for labour market and working life issues, gender equality issues, democracy and integration, small businesses, energy issues and industrial policy.

Government newsletter - Sweden's commitment abroad to change

This year, Sweden will be changing its peace and security operations in Afghanistan and Kosovo. This change is taking place to adapt to the increasingly stable situation in these countries. In future, there will be a greater focus on development assistance and civilian operations, while military support will gradually be phased out.
