Government newsletter - The debt crisis, what happens now?

Every day on TV and in the papers we can see new reports about the debt crisis. Greece has serious problems, but so do other EU countries. Sweden is standing strong in these turbulent times, but there are undoubtedly a lot of people who are concerned about developments nonetheless. In this newsletter you can read more about the Government's view on these matters.

Seven billion on the same small globe

Our numbers on the planet are increasing, in part because we live longer and fewer children die. More people means more challenges and opportunities, write Minister for International Development Cooperation Gunilla Carlsson and Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund Babatunde Osotimehin.

Two new brochures on forests

Two brochures on Sweden's forests have been published in English in the past week. 'Competitiveness requires gender equality' is the English translation of the Government's gender equality strategy for the forestry sector. The second brochure is a translation of the Government's action plan 'Sweden - the Forest Kingdom'. The Forest Kingdom is the Government's vision for creating new job opportunities in connection with Sweden's forests.

"With Gaddafi gone, work on building the new Libya can begin"

Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt has stated that the death of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi is a victory for the Libyan people and the international community, although the Government had hoped that Gaddafi would have been brought to trial.

Time for the 2nd Annual Forum on the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region

At the second Annual Forum on the EUSBSR in Gdansk, 24-26 October, the Swedish Government will be represented by the Minister for Environment, Lena Ek. State Secretary Marita Ljung will speek on the concept of a Ditigal Agenda for the Baltic Sea Region and participate in a panel discussion on the Swedish Model for Baltic Cooperation and the use of seed money for catalysing projects.

Lena Ek on future environmental policy

Minister for the Environment Lena Ek has now completed her appointments to the political staff at the Ministry of the Environment. In an interview, she describes her view of the challenges facing environmental policy and the issues that will define environmental policy in the time ahead.

"Financial stability requires coordinated European approach"

In a joint opinion piece published in the Financial Times on Wednesday, Minister for Foreign Affairs Carl Bildt and Minister for Finance Anders Borg write about the role of the banks, and state that a coordinated European approach is necessary to achieve financial stability.

Fredrik Reinfeldt condemns verdict against Julia Tymoshenko

Former Ukrainian Prime Minister Julia Tymoshenko was today sentenced to seven years in prison. Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt is critical of the verdict, which in his view "does not respect international standards as regards fair, independent and transparent legal process."

Magnus Kindbom to open seminar on World Food Day

On Friday 14 October 2011, a seminar will be held at the Government Offices to mark World Food Day. This year's theme is 'Food Prices - From Crisis to Stability', which focuses on the recent heavy price fluctuations on the food market, their underlying causes and the impact they have.
The seminar will be opened by State Secretary Magnus Kindbom, who is also chair of the Swedish FAO Committee.

Ban Ki-moon paid tribute to Dag Hammarskjöld

When UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon met Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt in Stockholm today, he paid tribute to his Swedish predecessor Dag Hammarskjöld. He also gave prominence to Swedens leading role in terms of commitment and support to the United Nations and its specialised agencies.
